Culture-Rich Santa Fe Celebrates Feast Day Dances at the Pueblos

by Susan Orth

Winter dances of the Pueblos have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. These profoundly moving ceremonies are defined by heart-beating drums, voices raised in prayer and the movements of the sacred dance. The dances are essentially prayers - prayers for good weather, good health, good friends, individual members of the Pueblo, all the people on the earth.

This celebration is something unique to Santa Fe New Mexico because the Indian Pueblos are located in the majestic mountain landscape between Santa Fe and Colorado. The Land of Enchantment is so rich in culture and diversity, events like the Dance for the Northern Pueblos are not hard to come by. With that said, these dances are an incredible, one-of-a-kind experience and highly recommended.

Please note that Pueblo dances are religious ceremonies, not performances. They should be treated the same as a church service. There are a few more rules about etiquette that can be found here.

Typical Holiday celebrations like visiting Santa, decorating the tree and lighting the Menorah are always fun, but there's something exhilarating about participating in another culture's traditions.  These dances hold great importance to the Pueblos and, whether you believe with them or not, you cannot deny their beauty.

That is the thing about living in Santa Fe New Mexico. Beauty is all around you.  Buying a home in Santa Fe is truly an investment because the land that it sits on is so rich in so many ways.  When you're ready to make the move, or even sell your Santa Fe home to a deserving buyer, give me a call.

Santa Fe is A Top Travel Desination - Again!

by Susan Orth

For the 19th Year in a row, Conde Nast Traveler magazine has voted Santa Fe New Mexico one of the best travel destinations in the U.S! Considering the poll has only been around for 23 years, this is quite an accomplishment.

Santa Fe was selected as the third most popular travel city in the country.  The best part is, this award was not selected by the editors of the magazine, but by the knowledgable travelers who read Conde Nast. More than 25,000 readers voted on the city's restaurants, lodges, retailers, galleries, performances, attractions and service providers. The ratings were based on Atmosphere/Ambience, Culture/Sites, Friendliness, Lodging, Restaurants, and Shopping.

The kind of people who voted have visited Santa Fe, or possibly already live in Santa Fe, and have been enthralled by its beauty...

They know that the Santa Fe restaurants have an atmosphere and quality of food you can't find anywhere else. They know that the galleries represent an artistic presence that lingers throughout Santa Fe's streets. They know that the city of Santa Fe has a personality all its own and is so addicting, they can't help but come back.

It's often these same travelers that become permanent residents of Santa Fe. They visit once, then find themselves returning on a regular basis, then realize that moving to Santa Fe is something they want to make a reality. Santa Fe real estate is a highly sought after commodity. Not just because of the beautiful Santa Fe homes, but because of the wonderful Santa Fe lifestyle. Sounds like something you might be interested in? Give me a call. I can help you make it a reality.

Celebrating Dia De Los Muertos in Santa Fe New Mexico

by Susan Orth

Celebrating Halloween in Santa Fe is not the same as celebrating Halloween any place else. You see in Santa Fe New Mexico, All Hallows' Eve coincides with the Mexican celebration, Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead.

On November 1st, it is believed that souls return to the Earth and are greeted with feasts, music and dancing. Instead of embracing the concept of death as Halloween does, Dia De Los Muertos is a holiday meant to celebrate the lives of passed on loved ones.

A large part of the celebration includes altars that are set up all throughout Santa Fe, where pictures of the deceased are placed, along with food, drink and activities the deceased cherished while they were alive. To guide the soul's way back to home, loved ones light candles to cover the altars and graveyards.

To celebrate this Day of the Dead like only Santa Fe can...
Attend the Dia De Los Muertos Community Celebration and Dance

When: Friday, 10/29, from 6 pm - 10 pm
Where: 555 Camino de la Familia, Santa Fe, NM 87501
Alters, ofrendas, shrines, music, dancers, costume contest, art, food and prizes! Come dressed in your finest Calaca apparel and bring a photo or an item of a loved one. This event is free to the public. If you'd like to install an altar or shrine, just call 992-0591 to reserve your space.
