Art Santa Fe

by Susan Orth

If you have ever visited or lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, you will no doubt agree that, more than any other single feature, art of all shapes, sizes, methods and descriptions is the heart and soul of this beautiful southwestern United States city. And this is saying a lot, since Santa Fe boasts a beautiful natural environment, a rich history and is the state capital of New Mexico.

Yes, there are magnificent mountain ranges dressing up the panoramic scenery of Santa Fe. Yes, there are lovely and picturesque historic churches, shops and restaurants. Yes, there is a vast, seemingly endless desert stretching to the horizon and supplying Santa Fe with breathtaking sunsets and invigorating sunrises. Yes, the climate and accompanying weather is nearly perfect year round. And, of course, there are numerous and varying other aspects, amenities and natural features that also play their individual roles in making Santa Fe the dramatic, one-of-a-kind city that it is. However, for people in Santa Fe and lovers of the city who visit, art is the definitive quality of the city, just as Dixieland music is the definitive quality of New Orleans.

The ART Santa Fe fair is a high-profile celebration and all-encompassing showcase of art, not only from the 240-plus galleries in the Santa Fe area, but also from prestigious, cutting-edge and emerging galleries, artists and dealers from every corner of the globe. It is an international event at which scene-seekers and regular people who love art rub elbows with the glamorous celebrities, the “name” artists and the stratospherically wealthy art collectors.

At the twelfth ART Santa Fe fair, running from July 12 through July 15 is held primarily at the Santa Fe Convention Center; however, the festivities don’t stop there. There is a gala celebration kicking off the event called Vernissage, which is the fancy French term describing the preview ceremony of an art exhibition. And, if you are going to attend the ART Santa Fe fair, you cannot miss its distinctive Art Santa Fe Presents keynote lecture, given by a prominent figure in today’s hip and trendy art scene.

So, if you love art and you love Santa Fe, ART Santa Fe is the place to be beginning on Thursday, July 12!

Santa Fe ARTfeast

by Susan Orth

The 15th annual Santa Fe Artfeast, held February 24th through 26th, was a huge success. The weekend was chock-full of original artwork, fine foods, eclectic fashion and impressive homes. All proceeds of the 2012 Artfeast went to the ARTsmart program, which helps provide art supplies and programs for Santa Fe public schools. In the last fourteen years, ARTsmart has raised nearly $1,000,000. ARTfeast is ARTsmart’s most significant fundraising campaign, and this year proved to be one of its best yet!

Here’s a rundown of this year’s events:

The Art of Fashion: The Runway Show and Luncheon combined the delectable Southwest cuisine of Luminaria Restaurant and The Living Room with a sneak peak of the hottest lines of local designers. This year’s designers included Elven Velvet, Asiatica, Cicada Collection, David Gaussoin, O’Farrell Hat Company, Boots and Boogie and Golden Eye.

The Edible Art Tour was a big hit, as more than 40 local restaurants and caterers inspired the overwhelming sentiment that their creations were almost too beautiful to eat, the operative word being “almost,” of course.

Feast or Famine combined music and food. The delectable hors d’oeuvres by Milagro satisfied the palette, while the hip music of DJ’s Joe Ray Sandoval, King George and Aztech Sol kept people dancing late into the night.

The ever so popular Art of Home Tour exceeded everyone’s expectations, with Santa Fe’s most immaculate and inventive homes taking center stage. The eight homes selected this year provided viewers with a variety of architectural and decorative styles.

The Gourmet Dinner and Auction, with Honorary Artists, Poteet Victory, was a spectacular event. The multi-course meal featured dishes by renowned local chefs, such as Lorin Parrish of Body Santa Fe, Steven Lemon of O Eating House, Kim Mueller of Real Food Nation & Supper Club, and Mark Connell of Max’s and Tomme.

Between the exhibits, auctions, special events and overall love of the arts, this year’s ARTfeast was a memorable one – how the planners can top this one remains to be seen!

3-Minute Film Fest in Santa Fe, NM

by Susan Orth

We all know that Santa Fe is overflowing with art and creativity. One sect of art that doesn’t receive as much attention as it should is cinematic art. Santa Fe celebrates its film makers and welcomes film makers from all over the world with its annual 3-Minute Film Fest. May 20, 2011 will mark the Fest’s 11th appearance in Santa Fe with submissions flowing in from amateurs and professionals. The 3-Minute Film Fest provides a great opportunity for budding Santa Fe filmmakers to showcase their creativity and for experienced artists to show off their skills in a condensed short film.

In 2000, Jerry Barron founded the 3-Minute Film Fest in Santa Fe as a way for local and regional filmmakers to promote their work in a juried exhibition. The Fest quickly attracted attention worldwide and now receives hundreds of submissions every year in categories like comedy, documentary, experimental, and animation. The 3-minute time limit is taken very seriously and provides a challenge for new filmmakers as well as professionals. Anyone is allowed to submit a short film for an entry fee of $15.

All participants will find helpful tips for successful filmmaking as well as reminders for submission on the 3-Minute Film Fest’s Facebook page. Submissions are due by April 11, 2011 and those selected for the exhibition will be notified by May 5, 2011. The Lensic, Santa Fe’s Performing Arts Center, will hold a gala on May 20, 2011 showcasing all of the films selected to be judged. This will be a great event to attend even if you don’t submit a film, just to see the work of your Santa Fe friends and neighbors.

Whether you’re a Santa Fe resident who is already involved in the arts or are thinking of relocating to Santa Fe, there is no better way to get involved in the artist community than pulling out a video camera and getting creative! Prospective home buyers in Santa Fe will love our new listing on East Alameda.  Only one block from the biggest art district in Santa Fe, Canyon Road, artists define this area of the city. The home’s proximity to Canyon Road’s endless art galleries and location along the Santa Fe River will provide plenty of inspiration for your short film. As a Santa Fe resident and real estate expert, I have plenty of experience with the area. Please contact me for a showing!

The Art of Santa Fe: Community, Culture, & More!

by Susan Orth

People usually come to Santa Fe for a special reason, whether they want to visit for a week of spiritual peace and regeneration, or to own a Santa Fe home nestled in the rolling hills of the vibrant city. Whatever the case may be, living in Santa Fe means that you are living in a city swarming with art and culture at every corner. Even the history of Santa Fe shows that the city proved to be of interest to artists from Europe and America who were interested in studying the land's native culture and natural beauty.

This same fact still proves true today. With it's extensive, unique culture and history, it is no surprise that people have been inspired by their Santa Fe experience. It is also no surprise that the importance of art and culture continues to be a vital part of Santa Fe's source of revenue: it is reported that about 39 percent of Santa Fe's economy comes from the city's active promotion of its art and culture. Many Native American and Hispanic artists have learned (and even modernized) the artistic techniques of their ancestors in order to make truly memorable works of art that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

A great example of this is the El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, which is "more like a community center than the conventional museum." This center takes pride in community, the promotion of Hispanic art, the idea of unifying diverse traditions, and the practice of getting young people engaged with the culture of Santa Fe. El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe also hosts music, dance, and acting classes as well as the vibrant Contemporary Hispanic Market.

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the Santa Fe Gallery Association represents many dealers, museums, and galleries that are actively involved in Santa Fe's thriving art community. This month's upcoming exhibits include Gordon Micunis: Art Jewelry at the Arroyo Gallery, Mike Mahon: Pastel Autumn at the Art Exchange Gallery, and Jessie Hummingbird - Native American Night Before Christmas at Silver Sun Santa Fe. For more information on these events and more, be sure to visit the Santa Fe Gallery Association's website.

Throughout the year, Santa Fe hosts multiple artistically charged events for the community to enjoy, including the visual, studio, and performing arts. Both visitors and Santa Fe home owners alike enjoy attending the world renowned annual art markets and traveling studio tours. With over 200 galleries and over a dozen cultural and historical museums, there's always a new and exciting exhibit for everyone to enjoy in Santa Fe! If you are looking for a piece of Santa Fe real estate, or if you need a Santa Fe Real Estate Agent to help you become a part of this city's thriving culture, be sure to give me a call!

The Markets of Santa Fe New Mexico

by Susan Orth

Living in Santa Fe means embracing its "market" culture.  From farmers' markets to art markets, Santa Fe was made for these kinds of cultural exchanges. The Santa Fe Farmers' Market is proud to be New Mexico's largest farmers' market and of the most widely recognized markets in the United States. With its unique offerings, community dedication and year-round availability, it is truly unlike any other farmers' market in the country.

Santa Fe holds some very high standards for its Farmers' Market, which may be what contributes to its success. Rule #1 - 100% products sold by its vendors are locally grown. Rule #2 - Craft items must use at least 80% of local ingredients and materials. Rule #3 - Only the people who grow and produce the products may sell the products.

If you're not convinced yet that Santa Fe has the very best Farmers' Market around, then maybe this will drive it home. CNN rated the Santa Fe Farmers Market in the top 10 in America's Best Farmers' Markets.

According to CNN, every region's farmers' market is known for that one distinctive food. For Santa Fe, it's our chili peppers. We boast the country's most diverse collection of chilies - which proves very important once we bring our loot from New Mexico market to New Mexico kitchen for some real southwestern cooking.

Santa Fe Indian Market
August 21-22
This may not be a Farmers' Market, but it is the ultimate art market - not just for Santa Fe, but for the entire nation of Native artists. 80 years going strong, the Santa Fe Indian Market has become the world's largest and most highly acclaimed Native American arts show and New Mexico's largest attended annual event. These great artists come from all sides of the country to gather in Santa Fe's Plaza, which often becomes the setting for getting "discovered."

Santa Fe is the perfect place for a Market of any kind - food, craft or otherwise. When one thinks of a market, they envision an open atmosphere, neighbors conversing, fresh local produce, and an inviting environment. This is essentially what Santa Fe is all about. If you are interested in Santa Fe Real Estate, please give me a call today. I would love help you discover what life could be like.
