Enjoying the Holidays Like a True Santa Fe Resident

by Susan Orth

Santa Fe New Mexico is definitely a one-of-a-kind place. Although part of the States, it boasts a culture all its own, especially at the holidays. After all, it is called "The City Different."  Now that you are thinking about moving to Santa Fe (or maybe you already live here and you are just following this Santa Fe Realtor for the fun of learning what's going on around town), you are going to have to become acclimated to the Holiday traditions in the Land of Enchantment

Candles in Bags: Also known as "Farolitos."  Fill small bags with sand and light them with votive candles and voila! You have a Farolito. This is New Mexico's version of the traditional Christmas decoration. You will find them sprinkled throughout Santa Fe, around buildings, in trees, on walls, and along sidewalks.

Winter Spanish Market: The Spanish Colonial Arts Society's annual winter market held in early December is an extravagant display of traditional Spanish Colonial artwork such as tin work, furniture, straw applique and Santos carving. Doing your holiday shopping here is sure to get you a one-of-a-kind, only-in-santa-fe, gift from the heart.

Christmas Eve, Noche Buena service: The midnight mass of the Rooster commemorates the folk story of the animals in the manger which were upset that no humans had come to see the Christ child. The story goes that an old rooster flew to a high point and announced the coming of the Messiah.

Christmas Eve at the Santa Fe Plaza: Adorned with thousands of farolitos (see above) that light up the city center, the Plaza is definitely the place to be on Christmas Eve. Apple cider is served while carolers fill the air with holiday music and the Santa Fe community strolls through to the nearby Cross of the Martyrs - also outlined in farolitos.

The Weather: Temperatures in December are normally in the low 40's during the day and the low 20's during the evening. However, don't shutter too much. With the sun still shining an average of 300 days a year, it never feels as bad as it sounds. In fact, it doesn't stop golfers from golfing and residents from hiking.

Skiing: The Sangre de Cristos Mountains, where Santa Fe sits at the base of, are covered in snow. Sixteen miles from the Plaza is the Santa Fe ski area (also known as Ski Santa Fe). This is the popular place to be around this time of the year. With 3,000 feet of height, 225 inches of snow, and a festive atmosphere, you can see why.

Native American Dances: See my previous blog to learn all about the Winter Dances of the Indian Pueblos.

Feast: Take a wild guess at the most popular ingredient in our Holiday dishes? That's right - Chile!  The traditional Christmas Eve meal is posole - dried corn fixed in a thick soup or stew with chiles. Other popular dishes include tamales, blue corn tortillas, and bizcochitos (tiny anise Christmas cookies that are the official state cookie of New Mexico).

Take all of this together and you get a city filled with sunny days, warm glowing lighting at night, culture and tradition, amazing food, fun things to do, and an overall festive atmosphere. What do you think? Do you think you could spend your holidays - and the rest of the year - in Santa Fe New Mexico Real Estate? If the answer is yes, then give us a call. We would be happy to find you the Santa Fe home of your dreams and make you an official Santa Fe resident. Before you know it, you could be enjoying all of these Christmas traditions in Santa Fe by next year!

Culture-Rich Santa Fe Celebrates Feast Day Dances at the Pueblos

by Susan Orth

Winter dances of the Pueblos have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. These profoundly moving ceremonies are defined by heart-beating drums, voices raised in prayer and the movements of the sacred dance. The dances are essentially prayers - prayers for good weather, good health, good friends, individual members of the Pueblo, all the people on the earth.

This celebration is something unique to Santa Fe New Mexico because the Indian Pueblos are located in the majestic mountain landscape between Santa Fe and Colorado. The Land of Enchantment is so rich in culture and diversity, events like the Dance for the Northern Pueblos are not hard to come by. With that said, these dances are an incredible, one-of-a-kind experience and highly recommended.

Dance Schedule for the Northern Pueblos for December

December 11, 12
POJOAQUE PUEBLO
Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day with vespers and procession
JEMEZ PUEBLO
Matachines Dances

December 24 - Christmas Eve
PICURIS and OHKAY OWINGEH
Torchlight Procession, Vespers and Matachines Dance
Dances after midnight Mass at TESUQUE PUEBLO
Buffalo, Deer and Antelope dances at NABE PUEBLO
Also after Mass TAOS PUEBLO Vespers and Procession of the Virgin Mary with dancers and bonfires

December 25 - Christmas Day
JEMEZ, TESUQUE, TAOS, OHKAY OWINGEH, SANTA CLARA and PICURIS various dances

December 25 - 27
OHKAY OWINGEH Turtle Dance

December 28
PICURIS PUEBLO Holy Innocents' Day
Children's Dance

Please note that Pueblo dances are religious ceremonies, not performances. They should be treated the same as a church service. There are a few more rules about etiquette that can be found here.

Typical Holiday celebrations like visiting Santa, decorating the tree and lighting the Menorah are always fun, but there's something exhilarating about participating in another culture's traditions.  These dances hold great importance to the Pueblos and, whether you believe with them or not, you cannot deny their beauty.

That is the thing about living in Santa Fe New Mexico. Beauty is all around you.  Buying a home in Santa Fe is truly an investment because the land that it sits on is so rich in so many ways.  When you're ready to make the move, or even sell your Santa Fe home to a deserving buyer, give me a call.

Hiking The Blue Dot Trail - Just Another Day in Santa Fe

by Susan Orth

When you live in Santa Fe, outdoor Rio Grande White Rock Canyonactivities like hiking and biking are not just something you do on a trip or something you see in a magazine advertisement. These are the everyday activities that make Santa Fe New Mexico such a fantastic place to wake up to every morning.

A couple weeks back, I hiked the Blue Dot Trail down to the Rio Grande River. I went about 800 feet down in one mile. Being that the trail is a virtual rock staircase, I made my way up…slowly.

Here are the stats of the trail:Half Way Down

    •    Distance: 1.1-mile (1.8 km) one way
    •    Elevation: 5,450 to 6,250 feet (1,910 m)
    •    Elevation Change: 800 feet (240 m)
    •    Fitness Level: Strenuous, but short
    •    Seasons: All seasons, except after heavy snow
    •    Trail Surface: Rocky and steep trail

The trailhead begins about 100 yards southwest of the overlook viewing platform. It is accessible from a small parking lot at the end of the last side road branching east off Overlook Road.

On the way to the river, you will come across a large Toreva block bench. This is basically a large piece of land that has moved downhill as a unit.

Midway through the trail, the ground you walk on actually changes from dark salt basaltic rock to light round granite stones.

As the trail nears the Rio Grande River, the trail passes a large spring seeping from rock fragments called Scree. Don't get too excited here - this water is not safe to drink. But it sure does look pretty.

This is such a gorgeous hike. You can't help but be enchanted by its timeless beauty. After all, this is the Land of Enchantment. As my two dogs Rubi and Chaco (it was Chaco's 2nd birthday) played around in the river, and I looked out at the magnificent view, I couldn't help but think how lucky I am to live in Santa Fe.

If you are considering moving to Santa Fe Real, I highly recommend exploring some of its trails.  They really bring you to the heart of Santa Fe and give you a taste of what it could be like to live here. We are experienced Santa Fe Real Estate brokers, yet still learn new things about this city everyday, each time finding something else to love.  When you're ready to buy a Santa Fe home, give us a call.

Walk off that Thanksgiving Meal in Santa Fe

by Susan Orth

As this Thursday is Turkey Day in Santa Fe, I thought I would like to remind you all of one of one of the best benefits to living in Santa Fe Real Estate - The City Different is known to be one of the country's most famous walking cities. That means that after that big meal of turkey, potatoes, and chile stuffing, there is no better way to burn it off than to go for a walk.

Small enough to navigate on foot, it's easy to get lost in its miles and miles of winding streets peppered with shops, characteristically Southwestern Santa Fe homes, historic buildings, art galleries, and restaurants. Whether you attempt to explore your new Santa Fe Neighborhood on your own, or you choose to take advantage of one of Santa Fe's famous walking tours - your body and mind will thank you for it.

Literary Landmarks Tour
Santa Fe's majestic landscape, cultural diversity and rugged setting, not surprisingly, can really inspire a curious author to write great literature. As a result, many bestselling books, articles, essays and poems have been written about the City Different. From famous novelists to playwrights, essayists to poets - these are the people who wandered the same streets you may walk every day, but didn't know it. The tour includes the VIllagra, a famous gathering spot for visiting writers to  sip martinis and gossip - the inspiration for the classic novel Death Comes for the Archbishop. The Plaza is also a stop, which was the setting for the popular mystery, Ride the Pink Horse. To do your own search of works by Santa Fe authors, stop at the Southwest Reading Room of the Santa Fe Public Library on 145 Washington Ave.

Sculpture Garden Tour
Nothing will work off that Thanksgiving dinner faster than walking 10 acres of trails, across juniper covered hills between the villages of Cerrillos and Galisteo. Allan Hauzous and his son Philip had a vision to create a family compound, constructing a series of studios and residences, then sculpture gardens, dance grounds and amphitheaters. The sculpture gardens present the family collection - 85 outdoor works total. Because the Allan Houser Compound is a private facility, tours are arranged by appointment only. This breathtaking facility is well worth the call; you may see Santa Fe in a whole new light.

Chocolate Lover's Odyssey
Okay. So I know the whole point of this walking was to burn off your turkey, but sometimes a big meal still leaves your sweet tooth wanting more. If this is the case, then Santa Fe's Chocolate Lover's Odyssey should be your next stop. Start off downtown Santa Fe in the Santa Fe Plaza at Todos Santos for chocolate milagros, dark chocolate truffles and whimsical "After Dinner Saints." Get a taste of true Santa Fe flavor at the Chocolate Smith at 851A Cerrillos Road. Green Chile Pistachio Bark and White Chocolate Lemon Lavender Bark are just a few flavors worth exploring. Without a doubt, you'll have to make a stop at the Kakawa Chocolate House at 1050 East Paseo de Peralta. If you've never tried hand-crafted European and Meso-American Aztec drinking chocolate - this is your chance.

If you are new to Santa Fe Real Estate, and you are still trying to get your bearings, check out my website for an explanation on the Santa Fe MLS Areas. I also added a Santa Fe MLS Area Map to give Santa Fe Homebuyers and Santa Fe Home Sellers a better idea of what they are working with. The city of Santa Fe may not be large, but somehow, a lot of culture, landscape and character come together to form one perfectly-sized City Different. As a Santa Fe Real Estate agent, I know this city well. I would love to take you for a walk, give you a tour, and show you why I love this city so much.

The Art of Santa Fe: Community, Culture, & More!

by Susan Orth

People usually come to Santa Fe for a special reason, whether they want to visit for a week of spiritual peace and regeneration, or to own a Santa Fe home nestled in the rolling hills of the vibrant city. Whatever the case may be, living in Santa Fe means that you are living in a city swarming with art and culture at every corner. Even the history of Santa Fe shows that the city proved to be of interest to artists from Europe and America who were interested in studying the land's native culture and natural beauty.

This same fact still proves true today. With it's extensive, unique culture and history, it is no surprise that people have been inspired by their Santa Fe experience. It is also no surprise that the importance of art and culture continues to be a vital part of Santa Fe's source of revenue: it is reported that about 39 percent of Santa Fe's economy comes from the city's active promotion of its art and culture. Many Native American and Hispanic artists have learned (and even modernized) the artistic techniques of their ancestors in order to make truly memorable works of art that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

A great example of this is the El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, which is "more like a community center than the conventional museum." This center takes pride in community, the promotion of Hispanic art, the idea of unifying diverse traditions, and the practice of getting young people engaged with the culture of Santa Fe. El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe also hosts music, dance, and acting classes as well as the vibrant Contemporary Hispanic Market.

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the Santa Fe Gallery Association represents many dealers, museums, and galleries that are actively involved in Santa Fe's thriving art community. This month's upcoming exhibits include Gordon Micunis: Art Jewelry at the Arroyo Gallery, Mike Mahon: Pastel Autumn at the Art Exchange Gallery, and Jessie Hummingbird - Native American Night Before Christmas at Silver Sun Santa Fe. For more information on these events and more, be sure to visit the Santa Fe Gallery Association's website.

Throughout the year, Santa Fe hosts multiple artistically charged events for the community to enjoy, including the visual, studio, and performing arts. Both visitors and Santa Fe home owners alike enjoy attending the world renowned annual art markets and traveling studio tours. With over 200 galleries and over a dozen cultural and historical museums, there's always a new and exciting exhibit for everyone to enjoy in Santa Fe! If you are looking for a piece of Santa Fe real estate, or if you need a Santa Fe Real Estate Agent to help you become a part of this city's thriving culture, be sure to give me a call!

Santa Fe is A Top Travel Desination - Again!

by Susan Orth

For the 19th Year in a row, Conde Nast Traveler magazine has voted Santa Fe New Mexico one of the best travel destinations in the U.S! Considering the poll has only been around for 23 years, this is quite an accomplishment.

Santa Fe was selected as the third most popular travel city in the country.  The best part is, this award was not selected by the editors of the magazine, but by the knowledgable travelers who read Conde Nast. More than 25,000 readers voted on the city's restaurants, lodges, retailers, galleries, performances, attractions and service providers. The ratings were based on Atmosphere/Ambience, Culture/Sites, Friendliness, Lodging, Restaurants, and Shopping.

The kind of people who voted have visited Santa Fe, or possibly already live in Santa Fe, and have been enthralled by its beauty...

They know that the Santa Fe restaurants have an atmosphere and quality of food you can't find anywhere else. They know that the galleries represent an artistic presence that lingers throughout Santa Fe's streets. They know that the city of Santa Fe has a personality all its own and is so addicting, they can't help but come back.

It's often these same travelers that become permanent residents of Santa Fe. They visit once, then find themselves returning on a regular basis, then realize that moving to Santa Fe is something they want to make a reality. Santa Fe real estate is a highly sought after commodity. Not just because of the beautiful Santa Fe homes, but because of the wonderful Santa Fe lifestyle. Sounds like something you might be interested in? Give me a call. I can help you make it a reality.

Celebrating Dia De Los Muertos in Santa Fe New Mexico

by Susan Orth

Celebrating Halloween in Santa Fe is not the same as celebrating Halloween any place else. You see in Santa Fe New Mexico, All Hallows' Eve coincides with the Mexican celebration, Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead.

On November 1st, it is believed that souls return to the Earth and are greeted with feasts, music and dancing. Instead of embracing the concept of death as Halloween does, Dia De Los Muertos is a holiday meant to celebrate the lives of passed on loved ones.

A large part of the celebration includes altars that are set up all throughout Santa Fe, where pictures of the deceased are placed, along with food, drink and activities the deceased cherished while they were alive. To guide the soul's way back to home, loved ones light candles to cover the altars and graveyards.

To celebrate this Day of the Dead like only Santa Fe can...
Attend the Dia De Los Muertos Community Celebration and Dance

When: Friday, 10/29, from 6 pm - 10 pm
Where: 555 Camino de la Familia, Santa Fe, NM 87501
Alters, ofrendas, shrines, music, dancers, costume contest, art, food and prizes! Come dressed in your finest Calaca apparel and bring a photo or an item of a loved one. This event is free to the public. If you'd like to install an altar or shrine, just call 992-0591 to reserve your space.

The beautiful thing about living in Santa Fe Real Estate is celebrating such events as Dia De Los Muertos. The people who live here are passionate about their traditions and it makes one feel proud to call Santa Fe Home. If you have any interest in relocating to Santa Fe New Mexico, or just want to find out a little bit more about it, I would love to hear from you.
